  The Art of Coaching

Coaching has become part of our business vocabulary. Some theories to explain the sudden surge in interest:

  • realisation that feedback is key to get the best out of people
  • people often don't know how to learn the skills they need
  • desire to overcome belief that firms don't care about people or their development

But coaching, which incorporates all of these, is more art than science, is difficult, and doesn't come naturally to managers. Many find it easier to either praise excessively or criticise attackingly, neither of which is particularly effective in encouraging people to develop or change.
